Impact Of Deposit Money Banks On Small And Medium Scale Industries’ Sales Growth
Publication Authors:

Year Published:

Abstract:
Abstract The research investigated the impact of the financing capacity of deposit money banks (DMBs) on the performance of small and medium scale industries (SMIs) in Southwest Nigeria. The study covered the period between 2011-2015. Data were collected from both primary and secondary sources. Primary data were collected through the use of questionnaires while secondary data were obtained from annual reports/publications with relevant information on the activities of DMBs and SMIs. Using the descriptive survey method, the multi-staged sampling technique was employed to select respondents from the study. The analytical technique employed was basically multivariate regression analysis with dummy variables using the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) approach. Hypothesis was formulated. From the result, the model showed that DMBs loan facility has positive significant impact on SMIs performance adopting sales growth as a measure (pvalue = 0.0118 < 0.05); the pvalue of 0.0118 < 0.05 level of significance therefore, the model is statistically significant. The study therefore concludes that deposit money banks (DMBs), like in other developing countries of the world have the potential to impact on the performances of small and medium scale industries in Nigeria, given the enabling environment. The study recommended that SMIs, particularly in the manufacturing sector should be given priority financing by banks because of their relative importance in economic stimulation while government policies on private sector, and in particular, SMIs and the banking system should further strengthen the bank and real sector nexus.

Bank Management And Rural Economic Development In Nigeria
Publication Authors:
 (ii) Ilori, D. B.
Year Published:

Abstract:
Abstract The study examines the effect of bank management on rural economic development with particular reference to commercial bank credit and rural economic development in Nigeria. The presence of a unit root in the time series data was tested using Augmented Dickey–Fuller (ADF) test, within the context of Ordinary Least Square (OLS) framework, and a double-log equation. Estimated regression model indicates that there is a positive and significant relationship between rural contribution to GDP (RGDP), a surrogate for rural economic development, and commercial banks credit to agriculture. The paper also reveals a passive commitment of the bank to financing SMEs and its weak drive for rural deposit mobilisation. The paper therefore, underscores the relevance of bank finance to enhancing rural and SMEs development to the nations’ economy. The paper recommends that monetary authority in Nigeria should ensure that banks adhere to monetary policy targets in order to enhance the campaign for rural economic development, and deepen financial inclusion of rural dwellers and small scale businesses, otherwise failure of which will continue to hurt rural lending and SMEs financing. Realizing that not so much have been achieved in the area of rural deposit mobilization, the paper also makes a campaign for an aggressive rural deposit mobilization by commercial banks.

Small And Medium Scale Enterprises Financing And Development In Nigeria: A Critical Assessment.
Publication Authors:

Year Published:
 2015
Abstract:
Abstract The study reviews the funding arrangements available to SMEs; assesses how far they have contributed to meeting the finance and development needs of the SMEs sub sector in Nigeria and make useful suggestions on the way forward. The study reveals that various programmes have been put in place by the Federal Government to enhance SMEs access to finance. Similarly, financial institutions, non-financial institution and NGOs have made considerable efforts to palliate the financial challenges confronting SMEs development yet, not much have been achieved in an attempt to position the sub-sector in the mainstream of economic development. The paper recommends, among others, that development of the informal sector becomes imperative in order to leverage on its perceived advantage over other means of financing SMEs. Also commercial banks should make more funds available to the sub sector and must imbibe the culture of real sector financing as in other emerging economies of the world.

Corporate Strategy, Planning And Performance Evaluation: A Survey Of Literature.
Publication Authors:

Abstract:
Abstract In recent years, corporate organizations are increasingly paying attention to strategic planning in an attempt to establish the relationship between strategic planning and firm’s performance. This paper reviews the literature on strategic planning and performance evaluation, and summarises the key elements of planning in large organisations. These elements include the top-down communication of corporate vision, goals and core values. In this paper, based on a survey of literature, it has been established that effective strategic planning indeed has a positive impact on performance. Although formal planning only will not bring about better performance, effective implementation will suffice. The paper concludes that strategic planning is vital for ensuring continued good corporate performance and only those organizations that practice some form of strategic planning will survive. It recommends that the process of strategic planning should be given its deserved attention in terms of all the prescribed steps within the existing literature. Management should focus on the strategic issues, on the important issues facing the business as a whole, including where it is headed and what it will or should become.

Sub- Saharan Africa And Entrepreneurship Development- A Panacea To Economic Transformation
Publication Authors:

 2015
Abstract:
Abstract Sub Saharan African entrepreneurs are beehives of hope for the continent and they are aptly positioned to transform the continent’s economies. A cursory of the literature provides credence to this though, at a relative low rate. The paper looks at how SSA is working out the answers and solutions to economic development in the region through entrepreneurship. The study reveals that SSA is confronted with a number of development challenges which include increased poverty rate, economic laggardness, low life expectancy, import dependency, small size and relatively large informal economies. In a similar breathe, private sectors fail to thrive in most part of SSA due to growth constraints which include access to finance, poor electricity and corruption, among others. The paper concludes that the above notwithstanding, SSA remains a bright spot for development, however, this is largely premised on how far the economies in the region are able to harness entrepreneurial drive as a consistent potent force for economic boost, moreso that the new development models are looking beyond aid to leveraging private sector creativity and innovation as a platform for change and economic transformation. The paper recommends among others, veritable alternatives to finance constraint such as leasing and project finance, enhancing business star-ups through reduction in the cost of registration, adequate budgetary provisions backed up with commitment and political will in order to tackle infrastructural deficits as well as the need to nurture the development of institutions that will act as catalyst to the realization of economic fortunes of African South of Sahara.

The Impact Of Micro Finance And Poverty Reduction In Nigeria.
Publication Authors:

Year Published:
 2013
Abstract:
Abstract The research study investigates the impact of micro finance on poverty reduction in Nigeria. The researcher used time series data from secondary sources. The Ordinary Least Square (OLS) method of linear multiple regression was used to estimate the parameters. Three different hypotheses were formulated and tested to determine the impact of microfinance banks activities on Human Development Index (HDI), a measure of incidence of human poverty which is a composite of longevity-life expectancy at birth, monetary indicators – GDP per capital, and literacy and educational attainment. The study reveals that (i) Loan and advances (LOA) of microfinance banks has a significant and positive impact on Human Development Index (HDI) (ii) Asset (AST) of microfinance banks is negatively related to HDI but rather insignificant and (iii) Deposit liabilities (DEL) of microfinance banks is negatively related to HDI but also insignificant. The test for overall significance reveals that access to micro finance services by micro enterprises, particularly by way of loans and advances has significant effect on human development. It therefore, emphasizes the use of micro credit for economic development and poverty alleviation. The study concludes that micro finance banks especially in Nigeria are identified to be one of the key players of mitigating the scourge of both economic and human poverty. Finally, it recommends that micro finance banks in Nigeria should shun unnecessary competition with commercial banks particularly in asset acquisition and rather operate more like SMEs financial institution. Also, realizing that not so much have been achieved by the bank in the area of deposit mobilization, a case was also made for an aggressive deposit mobilization scheme from the public.

Technical And Vocational Education: The Case Of Nigeria
Publication Authors:

Abstract:
Abstract Despite the contributions of technical education to national development, the leaders of Nigeria have not given this sector the attention it deserves. In spite of the strong emphasis on skills development for poverty reduction found in national policies, programmes and projections, it is not clear how the Government of Nigeria plans to realise its ambitions in this direction. The government at several fora had come up with high sounding proposals and development plans aimed at stemming the scourge of poverty and unemployment in Nigeria like the case of national policy geared towards technical education, but all efforts, as it were, failed to yield the desired result. This is because the relationship between skills development and poverty alleviation is neither simple nor automatic. It is against this background that this paper seeks to evaluate governments’ efforts and commitments to technical and vocational education in Nigeria and the possible way forward. The paper makes a campaign for a prodigious investment in skill acquisition if Nigeria will ever achieve its vision 2020 goal; realize economic growth and development evidenced with employment opportunities and an increasing life expectancy. A case is also made for the informal sector, realising that the productive capacity of this economic unit is sub-optimal as a result of lack of both pre and post training opportunities.

Investment In Research And Development And Firm’s Productivity In Manufacturing Sector: The Case Of SMEs In Southwest Nigeria.
Publication Authors:
 Ilori, D. B.
Year Published:
 2006
Abstract:
Abstract The study investigated the relationship between investment in research and development (R&D) and SMEs’ performance in Southwest Nigeria. The study concentrated on the activities of SMEs in the industrial and manufacturing industry, using Manufacturing Association of Nigeria Classification (MAN). Using the survey design method, the multi-staged sampling technique was employed to select respondents from the study. Data were collected from both primary and secondary sources. Secondary data were obtained from annual reports/publications with relevant information on R&D in SMEs. Primary data were collected through the use of questionnaire. A sample size of 365 SMEs across the six states of the geo-political zone was used while a total of 208 sets of questionnaire were returned. Both descriptive and analytical techniques were used to analysis the results. The analytical technique employed was basically multivariate regression analysis with dummy variables using the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) approach. The results showed that external support for SMEs investment in R&D remains a challenge. The outcome of R&D and innovation showed that in most cases, one to two (1-2) new products, improved products, new technology, new business plan and innovative ideas were added to firms under investigation. Hypothesis was formulated. The regression model showed that SMEs which invested in R&D have four points (4.095) higher on productivity scales compared to those which did not, and the relationship is statistically significant with pvalue 0.000 < 0.05. The study, therefore, concluded that investment in R&D has positive significant relationship with SMEs’ productivity. The study recommended that government and other stakeholders should extend the research-industry-extension services to SMEs. In this case, research grants to R&D inclined SMEs like the manufacturing industry would be most appropriate.
